Please don’t forget that this coming Friday, June 20this our next DRA Euchre Luncheon. Admission is only $5 and includes sandwiches, pickles and chips, topped off with a sinfully good dessert tray created by Sandra Daigle of Hillcrest Farms. A 50/50 Draw and “Lone Hand” competition are also part of the fun. The tournament is held in the DRA Hall at 19053 County Road 24, starting at 12:00 noon and wrapping up around 3:30 PM.
If you’ve been hesitant to attend the event because your euchre skills are a bit rusty, don’t be. The hallmark of the Dunvegan tournament is that it’s low-impact euchre. That’s not to say we don’t have proficient players in attendance, because we do. However, they’re not into cut-throat competition. They’re there because they enjoy good food, playing cards and meeting like-minded, friendly folks.
Artscape in Dunvegan
Starting this coming Saturday, thirty-seven local artists will be exhibiting their works at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan. The Glengarry Artists’ Collective, a non-profit association of local artists, organized this nine-day exposition, and it promises to be an eye-opener. As you’ll see, while the members share a love of art, the ways in which they express themselves span an impressive range of media… from paint on canvas and light on pixels to a blowpipe dipped in molten glass and a plasma cutter on steel. The group, which was started less than two years ago with just twelve artists, now boasts a membership of 82. If you noticed the two new murals in Alexandria, they are there because of the Collective. And this league of artists hopes to enrich the visual landscape of other towns and villages across Glengarry.
If you like art, I strongly encourage you to attend the vernissage on Saturday, July 21stfrom 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Open to the general public, it’s the perfect opportunity to meet the artists, view their work and enjoy a few nibbles. As an added bonus, the museum has waived the normal entry fee for those attending the vernissage. In other words, admission for art lovers on Saturday, from 1:00 to 4:00, is free. And if you can’t make it to the opening, the exhibition runs from July 21stuntil July 29th, so there’s plenty of time for you to drop by. I’m told one or two members of the Collective will be on hand every day to greet you and answer your questions.
Among the artists participating in this exhibition are two talented Dunveganites… Sarah Jane Raymond and Brenda Kennedy. The works of three honourary Dunveganites (folks who have contributed to our community by volunteering at the museum) will also be on display: Flip Flockton, Kerry Mcintosh and Ruth Stanton.
Looking ahead to the future — as a goal for 2019 — Collective members have been challenged to produce works that speak to two themes: “Glengarry, my home” and “Alexandria at 200.” The goal of this group exercise is to produce a double mural that celebrates the 200thbirthday of the North Glengarry’s capital. The group is hopeful that this nine-day exhibit at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum will serve as a stimulus for their project and get the historical creative juices flowing.
